Governing Body

What do school governors do?

Governors work with senior leaders in the strategic development of the school and in raising standards of achievement. Duties include setting the school’s vision, aims & objectives, approving the school budget and appointing the headteacher.

Governors must both support and challenge the headteacher, so need to gain an understanding of the school’s overall performance in order to explain its decisions and actions. They do this by attending regular meetings, carrying out school visits and meeting with senior leaders. They also attend training in order to keep up to date with the requirements of their role.  Although there are different categories of governor they are all equal, work as a team and make collective decisions.  All abide by the governing body code of conduct. The categories of governor in the Hertford Federation governing body are: co-opted and local authority (both appointed by the governing board); parent governor and staff governor (elected by the parental/staffing body) and headteacher staff governor (who can choose to take up the position).  An in-depth handbook about the important work of school governors has been produced by the Department for Education.  The notes, minutes, from the formal meetings held are posted on the governors' meetings page.

Hertford Federation Governing Board

There used to be separate governing bodies at Hertford Junior School and Hertford Infant and Nursery School. At a joint meeting on 15 May 2017 both governing bodies decided to join up 'federate' their governing bodies and adopt the new name of Hertford Federation.  The newly constituted Hertford Federation started on 3 July 2017 and current  governors are listed below.  It was also agreed to appoint the deputy headteacher from each school as associate members. Associate members do not have a vote at meetings of the full governing body.  There is currently a vacancy for a co-opted governor and if you are interested in applying please contact either Chair of Governors: jennyperrin@hertfordjun.brighton-hove.sch.uk or traceyhill@hertfordinf.brighton-hove.sch.uk  an application form is available here.
